China for Travelers

Where the Yangtze meets the Jialing

Chongqing

重庆

The city is smaller than it looks — the headline sights cluster on a single peninsula, and most of them cost nothing. What takes the planning is everything outside it: two UNESCO sites in opposite directions, and whether you carry on down the river. Here is where each of our 22 Chongqing guides fits.

Free does not mean effortless here: the cable car is a five-minute ride behind a queue that runs to two hours at weekends, and the night cruise boards at two different piers 1.2 km apart.

First time here?

One peninsula, and the river that leaves it

Chongqing is built on a spur of land between two rivers, and almost everything a first visit wants is on it. The city reads as vast because it is vertical, not because the sights are far apart — measured against our own coordinates, Hongyadong, Jiefangbei, the cable-car station and the cruise pier are all within about a kilometre. Two days covers the city. A third or fourth buys a UNESCO site.

01

Hongyadong

1-2 h · Free

Eleven storeys of stilt houses stacked against the cliff and lit gold from about eight — the photograph the city is known by, and it costs nothing to stand in front of. The only real decision is which side of the water you shoot it from.

Liziba

20-30 min · Free

A working monorail threading through floors 6 to 8 of an occupied nineteen-storey tower, every few minutes, all day. Twenty minutes is plenty — and what people get wrong here is where to stand, not when to turn up.

The Three Gorges

4 days / 3 nights · from US$520 pp

Chongqing is where the Three Gorges sailing starts, and four days downstream to Yichang is the most famous thing you can do from here. It also costs you a major city, so it belongs on a two-week trip rather than a long weekend.

Is it worth it?
Map of central Chongqing showing the Jialing and Yangtze rivers meeting at the tip of the Yuzhong peninsula. Hongyadong, Jiefangbei, the Yangtze Cableway station and the Chaotianmen cruise pier sit together at the peninsula's eastern end within about a kilometre of each other; Liziba is roughly four kilometres west along the same peninsula on metro Line 2; Ciqikou is far to the north-west, about thirteen kilometres from the others. An inset in the lower left magnifies that eastern cluster across two kilometres, separating the four: Hongyadong on the Jialing bank at the north, the Chaotianmen pier further east at the peninsula's point, the Yangtze Cableway station on the Yangtze side to the south-east, and Jiefangbei inland to the south-west of them.HongyadongHongyadongChaotianmenChaotianmenCablewayCablewayJiefangbeiJiefangbeiYuzhong peninsula · 2 km acrossCiqikou Ancient TownCiqikouLizibaThree Gorges Museum3 Gorges Museum

Why the city feels small

18 km across
Four of the six sit inside 1.4 km of each other at the eastern tip of the peninsula — which is why an evening here is a walk, not an itinerary. Liziba is 3.8 km west on Line 2. Ciqikou, at 12.6 km, is the only city sight that is a journey, and the two rivers are the reason the cableway and the night cruise exist at all.

How long

Two days for the city. The rest is day trips.

Most people pair Chongqing with Chengdu, which is just over an hour away by train. Everything below assumes you are sleeping here.

  1. Day 1

The peninsula on foot — Jiefangbei, the cliff trail, the cable car while the queue is still short, and Hongyadong at dusk.

  2. Day 2

Dazu Rock Carvings. The direct tourist coach from Jiefangbei beats the train, because Dazu South station is 40 km from the carvings with no shuttle. Back in the city for the night cruise.

  3. Day 3

Ciqikou in the morning, Liziba on the way back in. An afternoon train out, or a last evening on Nanbin Road looking back at the skyline.

Regional map with Chongqing in the centre, Dazu Rock Carvings about eighty kilometres west, and Wulong Karst about a hundred and twenty kilometres east-south-east, with the Yangtze running east past Fuling towards Wulong. The two UNESCO sites are roughly two hundred kilometres apart from each other.Dazu Rock CarvingsDazuWulong KarstWulongChongqingChongqing

The two days out

Region
They lie in opposite directions and are 200 km apart from each other, so a single trip realistically takes one. Wulong is 120 km east and eats a whole day, leaving from Chongqing East; Dazu is 81 km west and fits in half a day, and the downtown tourist coach beats the train because Dazu South station is 40 km from the carvings with no shuttle.

Where to sleep

Five areas, and only three real choices

The column that matters is the last one. Measured from our own attraction coordinates, Jiefangbei and Hongyadong score identically and sit 600 m apart — picking between them is choosing a view, not a location. The genuine forks are whether you sleep across the river, and whether you go out to Shapingba for the sake of Ciqikou and the Chengdu trains.

AreaRight forMean to the six sightsThe catch
Jiefangbei解放碑A first trip — you want to walk out of the lobby into it3.2 kmThe default, and priced like it. Noisy at street level until late.
Hongyadong洪崖洞The view out of the window is the reason you booked3.2 km600 m from Jiefangbei and identical on every distance we measured — a room type, not a second decision.
Nan'an / Nanbin Road南滨路Looking AT the skyline rather than standing in it4.3 kmAcross the river. Lovely at night, and every outing starts with a bridge crossing.
Guanyinqiao观音桥Newer rooms, lower rates, and the shortest run to Chongqing North5.1 kmA working CBD on the north bank — 4.3 km to the main station, but nothing to walk to after dinner.
Shapingba沙坪坝Ciqikou and the Chengdu trains, cheaply10.3 km⚠️ Right out of the centre. It makes sense for Ciqikou (4.5 km) and almost nothing else.

Straight-line distances between our attraction coordinates, averaged across the six city sights. Treat them as a ranking rather than a walk: this city stacks streets on top of one another, and 400 m on a map can be six floors of stairs.

Everything we have

Which guide answers your question

Sights carry our verdict — must see, worth it, or skip if you are tight — and each group is ordered by it rather than alphabetically. Transport and practical pages do not: “must see” answers whether to go somewhere, and a railway station has no such question.

Six things that catch people out

A map distance is not a walk
Streets here run at several levels over each other, so two points 400 m apart can be separated by a cliff. Trust the metro exit number over the blue dot, and expect the lift inside a shopping mall to be a public right of way.
Liziba is free, and outside the gates
The viewing platform is at street level, about 65 m from exit 2 — you never buy a metro ticket. Trains pass every 3 to 8 minutes, so there is nothing to time.
The night cruise has two piers
Chaotianmen and Hongyadong are about 1.2 km apart and a ticket is valid only at the one printed on it. Boarding is real-name, so carry the passport you booked with.
November is low season at Wulong, high at Dazu
The two UNESCO sites do not share a calendar. Wulong drops the Three Natural Bridges from ¥155 to ¥125 on 1 November; Dazu holds its high-season ¥115 until the 30th. If the trip is flexible, that decides which one goes in the diary.
The metro still names a closed terminal
Both T2 buildings at the airport are shut, but the metro stop called Jiangbei Airport T2 runs on as normal — and Line 3 reaches only that one. Line 10 is the line that carries on to T3, where the flights are.
There is no US consulate here
Chongqing has UK, Canadian, Danish and Japanese consulates, all in central Yuzhong. US citizens are covered from the embassy in Beijing — worth knowing before you need it, not after.

Pharmacies (chain, mostly 24h)
