Use Zhangjiajie West 张家界西站 for the national park — it’s the high-speed station; the older downtown Zhangjiajie 张家界站 is for slower trains. The Wulingyuan park entrance is ~40 min by bus/taxi from either.

The line that changed this trip

For years, getting from Chongqing to Zhangjiajie meant a long overnight conventional train or a short but fiddly flight. The high-speed corridor — completing the link between Chongqing and the Zhangjiajie–Jishou–Huaihua and Qian–Zhang–Chang high-speed lines — has collapsed the fastest journey to about 2h 2m over roughly 430 km, city-centre to the edge of the Avatar mountains. About 17 direct departures a day leave Chongqing East. That single change flips the default: for most foreign travellers the train is now the obvious choice over flying.

Use Chongqing East — and arrive at Zhangjiajie West

Two stations to get right, one at each end. The fast ~2-hour trains start from Chongqing East Railway Station (重庆东站), the new southeast high-speed hub that opened in 2025. A handful of services also start from Chongqing North, Chongqing West and even the airport station — but those are routed the long way round and take 3h30m to 4h20m. Same destination, nearly double the time, so always match the origin station to the train number on your ticket. Full detail in the Chongqing East Railway Station guide.

At the far end, high-speed trains arrive at Zhangjiajie West, not the old downtown station — and the famous Avatar / Wulingyuan scenery is the national park about 32 km away, a separate transfer:

Zhangjiajie West 张家界西站use this

The high-speed station, northwest of the city. The fast Chongqing trains arrive here. From the forecourt, tourist coaches and taxis run to Wulingyuan (for the national park) and into town for Tianmen Mountain.

The older downtown station, used by slower conventional trains and handy for the Tianmen Mountain cable car right beside it. The fast Chongqing trains do not use it — read your ticket.

Classes and price

For two hours, second class is comfortable and what most people ride:

ClassPriceWorth it?
Second classmost buy¥191 – ¥2613+2 seating, power at every seat — what most people ride for two hours.
First class¥305 – ¥370A 2+2 layout and a quieter car — a small upgrade worth it on a busy holiday train.
Business class¥630 – ¥763More than triple the fare and overkill for this distance.

Prices vary a little by train and how far ahead you book; the cheapest discounted fares go first. On peak dates (July–August, the October national-day week) book a few days ahead.

Train vs flight

Chongqing does have flights to Zhangjiajie Hehua (DYG), roughly 70 minutes in the air. But DYG is a small airport with limited Chongqing frequencies, and once you add the trip out to Chongqing Jiangbei, security, boarding and the transfer from DYG into town, the door-to-door time lands around four hours — longer than the train’s ~3h door-to-door, and usually more expensive. Unless a specific flight time fits your schedule perfectly, take the train.

How to book with a foreign passport

12306 English app — the official China Railway channel: face-value fares, no booking fee. The trade-off is hassle — passport registration must be approved before you can buy (often slow), and customer service is Chinese-first and limited if a booking goes wrong.

Real-name rule — the name and passport number on the ticket must match what you present; e-tickets are scanned at the gate, no paper pickup needed.

Arrived at Zhangjiajie West — onward to the park

Zhangjiajie West Railway Station (张家界西站) sits outside the city, so the journey is not over at the platform — Zhangjiajie has no metro and runs on buses, tourist coaches and DiDi. Most first-time visitors are headed for the Avatar / Wulingyuan national park, roughly 26 km northeast; the times below are from the station forecourt.

Verification scope

Route data — distance, journey time, fare bands and daily frequencies — is sampled from China’s national rail system and refreshed monthly. The Zhangjiajie West transfer distances and taxi times are from Amap (高德地图) routing, checked 2026-06-14.

Confirm before booking: the fast ~2-hour services leave Chongqing East (重庆东), and arrive at Zhangjiajie West (张家界西), not the older downtown Zhangjiajie Station. Match the origin station to the train number on your ticket.
