The route at a glance

Suzhou and Hangzhou sit at two corners of the Yangtze-delta triangle, linked by frequent high-speed trains across roughly 170 km. The fastest G-train does it in 1h 25m; most run 1h 25m – 2h depending on stops and the station pairing. With about 179 departures a day, this is a turn-up-and-go corridor — no need to fly, and rarely a need to book far ahead. Coming via Suzhou? See the Suzhou railway station guide.

The one thing to check: which stations

Unlike the Shanghai hops, this corridor spreads across several stations at both ends, so the station check matters more than usual:

Hangzhou East 杭州东站aim for this

On Metro Lines 1 & 4, the closest HSR station to West Lake (~18 min on Line 1). If your trip is built around the lake, prefer a train ending here.

Hangzhou West 杭州西站also used

A newer station in the northwest, used by many fast trains on the 2024 Shanghai–Suzhou–Huzhou line. Fine, but further from the lake — only ideal if your hotel is on that side.

At the Suzhou end, departures use Suzhou North (苏州北站, Metro Line 2), the newer Suzhou South (苏州南站) on the Shanghai–Suzhou–Huzhou line, or the central Suzhou Railway Station (苏州站) — handier for the gardens and old town. Match the station to where you are staying, and confirm both ends when you book. Station layouts and metro exits are in the Suzhou railway station guide.

Classes and price

Fares are dynamically priced but stay low on this short corridor:

ClassPriceWorth it?
Second classmost buy¥75 – ¥1443+2 seating, power at every seat — what almost everyone buys.
First class¥120 – ¥2322+2 seating; a minor upgrade for a 90-minute ride.
Business class¥262 – ¥445Available on some departures; rarely necessary here.

Pairing Suzhou and Hangzhou

Most travellers running this leg are stitching together the Yangtze-delta triangle. In Suzhou, the draw is the UNESCO classical gardens, the canals and Pingjiang Road — see things to do in Suzhou. In Hangzhou, it is West Lake, the Lingyin Temple and the Longjing tea hills. Both pair naturally with Shanghai as a three-city loop.

West Lake in Hangzhou — pavilions and causeways across calm water, the headline sight at the Hangzhou end of the Suzhou–Hangzhou train.
West Lake, Hangzhou — about 18 minutes from Hangzhou East on Metro Line 1, and the reason most travellers make the Suzhou → Hangzhou hop.

How to book with a foreign passport

12306 English app — the official China Railway channel: face-value fares, no booking fee. The trade-off is hassle — passport registration must be approved before you can buy (often slow), and customer service is Chinese-first and limited if a booking goes wrong.

Trip.com ↗ — the same China Railway seats, booked in English with a foreign Visa or Mastercard, no verification wait and 24/7 multilingual support. Prices track 12306, and with new-customer promotions Trip often comes out level or cheaper. As China’s largest OTA you can also add hotels, attraction tickets and tours to the same trip. Real-name rule — the name and passport number on the ticket must match what you present; e-tickets are scanned at the gate, no paper pickup needed.
