China for Travelers

A province, not a city — and the distances are the plan

Yunnan

云南

The mistake here is underestimating the map. Yunnan is not a city with sights around it — the five things people come for sit in four different prefectures, separated by internal flights and half-days on a bus. And one of them books like a Beijing palace: Jade Dragon is real-name and face-scanned, released 7 days ahead at 20:00, and reported gone within minutes. Here is where each of our Yunnan guides fits.

A week is the north only

Two things will cost you a day here if you miss them. Jade Dragon releases 7 days ahead at 20:00 and sells out in minutes — and even with a ticket, admission stops at 16:00, TWO HOURS before the gate closes at 18:00. And Tiger Leaping Gorge has two entrances at two prices, ¥45 from the Shangri-La side and ¥65 from the Lijiang side, decided by which road you arrive on rather than by what you buy.

First time here?

Everything here is further apart than it looks

Lijiang is the base for three of the five: the old town is free to walk, the mountain is an hour out, and the gorge starts two hours north. Kunming is the gateway and the Stone Forest is a half-day from it. Yuanyang is the outlier — two buses a day and a mountain transfer at the far end — which is why it belongs on a fortnight and almost never on a week. That is a distance judgement, not a verdict on the terraces.

01

Lijiang Old Town

3-8 h · Free

Free to walk, and the base for three of the five things people come to this province for. ⭐ The maintenance fee changed in the visitor's favour: ¥50 valid 365 days, down from ¥80 for one week — so passing back through between the mountain and the gorge now costs nothing.

The northern base
02

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

5-8 h · ¥100

¥100 entry plus ¥140 for the Big Cable Car to 4,506 m. ⛔ Real-name and face-scanned, released 7 days ahead at 20:00 and gone in minutes — and admission stops at 16:00, two hours before it closes.

03

Tiger Leaping Gorge

6-16 h · ¥45

The best multi-day walk in the country that needs no permit. ⛔ Two entrances at two prices — ¥45 from the Shangri-La side, ¥65 from the Lijiang side — decided by the road you arrive on. Start from Qiaotou 07:00-08:00 so the high trail finishes in daylight.

Which side you enter

How long

A week is the north. Two weeks reaches the south

A week covers the north — Kunming in, Dali, Lijiang, the mountain and the gorge — and that is the trip most people should take. Ten days adds Shangri-La or an unhurried Dali. Fourteen is the first honest number that also reaches Yuanyang, which is a long way south of everything else on this page.

  1. Days 1-7

The week above, with a real second night in Dali rather than a passing one.

  2. Days 8-10

Shangri-La at the top of the gorge, or back to Lijiang slowly. ⭐ The ¥50 town fee now runs 365 days, so coming back through costs nothing extra.

Where to sleep

You will sleep in three or four of these

Nobody does Yunnan from one hotel. The question is not which base to pick but how many nights each one earns — and the province rewards moving slowly far more than it rewards covering ground.

AreaRight forWhere it isWhat it buys you
LijiangMost of a Yunnan tripThe northern baseThe old town is free to walk, and the mountain, the gorge and Shangri-La all run from here. If you only sleep in one place in this province, sleep here.
DaliThe lake, and slowing down~2 h south of LijiangOn the way up from Kunming, and the town most people wish they had given an extra night to.
KunmingArriving, and the Stone ForestThe gatewayA transport hub more than a destination. One night on the way in, and the Stone Forest as a half-day from it.
Shangri-LaThe Tibetan plateau edgeNorth of the gorge3,200 m, and it is felt. Worth it if you are walking the gorge anyway, and a hard sell as a separate trip.
The Yuanyang rimSunrise over the terracesFar south⚠️ An overnight is mandatory for the sunrise, and the terraces are a long way from everything else here. This is a two-week decision.

Everything we have

Which guide answers your question

Sights carry our verdict — must see, worth it, or skip if you are tight — and each group is ordered by it rather than alphabetically. Transport and practical pages do not: “must see” answers whether to go somewhere, and a railway station has no such question.

On the ground

Five things that catch people out

One mountain books like a Beijing palace
Jade Dragon is real-name and face-scanned, released 7 days ahead at 20:00, and reported to sell out within minutes in season. Book it before you book anything else in the province — the rest of a Yunnan week can move around it, and it cannot move around you.
It stops admitting two hours before it closes
Open 07:00-18:00, admission stops 16:00. That is the widest gap between last entry and closing time on this site, and our own guide carried no last-entry figure at all until September 2026. A ticket in your hand does not help at 16:00.
The gorge has two entrances at two prices
¥45 from the Shangri-La side, ¥65 from the Lijiang side. Not a season split and not a concession — two gates on opposite sides of one gorge, and which you pay is decided by the road you came in on. Start from Qiaotou between 07:00 and 08:00 so the first day finishes in daylight.
The Lijiang fee changed in your favour
¥50 per person valid 365 days under rules effective August 2025, down from ¥80 for one week. Most English guides still print the old figure, and the practical difference is that passing back through Lijiang between the mountain and the gorge now costs nothing.
Yuanyang is a fortnight decision
¥70 combined and Azheke a separate ¥30 — but the ticket is the cheap part. Two buses a day from Kunming at ¥79-¥107, 4.5-6 hours, then a 2-3 hour mountain transfer, and a night on the rim is mandatory if you want the sunrise. Extraordinary, and a long way from the rest of this page.

Getting online

Your phone stops working the way you expect

China blocks Google, WhatsApp and Instagram at the network level, so a local SIM and hotel Wi-Fi do not get you round it — and since the April 2026 crackdown a VPN is no longer a dependable workaround. What works is a combination: your home SIM on international roaming, which keeps your real number for the SMS codes Chinese apps send, plus a travel eSIM — Holafly, Airalo or Nomad eSIM — routing through a foreign carrier so the firewall never applies to it.

Sort it before you fly. A foreign eSIM profile generally cannot be installed once the phone is already in mainland China, and that is a location restriction, so airport Wi-Fi does not solve it.

If something goes wrong in YunnanNational emergency numbers, hospitals used to foreign patients, and the PSB Exit-Entry offices.
  • 110PoliceGeneral emergency. English-speaking dispatchers in major cities.
  • 120Ambulance / MedicalMedical emergency. Ask for an English-speaking operator — the dispatcher can often find one.
  • 119FireFire emergency.
  • 122Traffic accidentFor traffic incidents, including on expressways and mountain roads.
  • 12308China consular protection (foreigners' affairs)The Chinese government's hotline for foreign-affairs incidents — used by foreign embassies when their citizens are in trouble in China. English-speaking operators available.

Yunnan is the only Chinese region where Kunming, the provincial capital, hosts a substantial foreign consular cluster — but the consulates are all Southeast-Asian, not Western. Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and Bangladesh all maintain consulates-general in Kunming, reflecting Yunnan's role as China's overland gateway to mainland Southeast Asia. For travellers from those countries this is genuinely useful — your consulate is in the same province as your trip. For Western travellers it is the opposite: there is no Western consulate anywhere in Yunnan, and the US Consulate-General Chengdu (which formerly covered Yunnan) was closed by the Chinese government in July 2020 and has not reopened as of 2026. US citizens with passport emergencies must contact the US Embassy Beijing (+86-10-8531-4000) or arrange travel to the US Consulate-General Shanghai or Guangzhou. The Australian Consulate-General Chengdu and the German Consulate-General Chengdu cover Yunnan for their respective nationalities; the British Consulate-General Chongqing is the nearest UK consular service; the Canadian Consulate-General Chongqing is the nearest Canadian one. The local PSB Exit-Entry office handles the police-report step regardless of where you travel for embassy processing — and because a Yunnan trip covers four bases (Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La), foreigners file at the PSB office of whichever city they are based in. Kunming Medical University runs the foreigner-experienced hospitals in Kunming (the central Xichang Road campus is metro-served by Panjiawan on Line 2); Lijiang People's Hospital is the foreigner-default in Lijiang; Dali University First Affiliated Hospital is the foreigner-default in Dali; and the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture People's Hospital is the foreigner-default in Shangri-La (which sits at 3,200 m on the Tibetan-plateau edge — altitude effects matter, and altitude sickness is the single most common foreigner-medical case in this corner of Yunnan).

Consulates

For a lost passport or a major emergency. If your country has no consulate in this city, your nearest support is your embassy in Beijing or a consulate in another Chinese city. Phone numbers are not listed here — consulate phones change with staffing; consult your country's official Foreign-Affairs website for the current number.

Hospitals

For medical emergencies dial 120 (ambulance). The major hospitals listed below are large, well-equipped, and most likely to have English-speaking staff. For non-emergency visits, ask your travel insurance for in-network options.

  • First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University (Xichang Road Campus)昆明医科大学第一附属医院(西昌路院区)西昌路295号Metro: Metro Line 2 潘家湾 (Panjiawan) Exit A — ~350m walkThe central campus of Kunming Medical University's flagship affiliated hospital — a Grade III-A (三甲) general hospital with 24-hour emergency care. The university affiliation makes it the most likely Kunming hospital to have English-speaking doctors, and Metro Line 2 (Panjiawan station, exit A) puts it directly on the central Kunming transit spine. The default choice for foreigners staying in Kunming city.
  • Yunnan First People's Hospital云南省第一人民医院金碧路157号Yunnan's provincial-level top general hospital, on Jinbi Road in central Kunming — Grade III-A (三甲), 24h emergency, the largest and best-equipped hospital in the province. Useful for complex cases that the city hospitals would normally refer onwards.
  • Lijiang People's Hospital (Main Campus)丽江市人民医院福慧街522号Lijiang's main municipal general hospital — Grade III-A (三甲), 24h emergency department, on Fuhui Street in the new city (not inside the UNESCO Old Town, which is pedestrian-only). The default choice for foreigners based in Lijiang Old Town, Shuhe, or at hotels around the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain side. There is a newer Ronghua (荣华) campus at Xueshan Road 120 in Shuhe if you are on the west side. For altitude-sickness symptoms after a fast climb from the lowlands or after a Shangri-La leg, this is the closest serious hospital.
  • First Affiliated Hospital of Dali University大理大学第一附属医院嘉士伯大道32号Dali's main university-affiliated general hospital — Grade III-A (三甲), 24h emergency, on Carlsberg Avenue (嘉士伯大道, named for the Carlsberg brewery's local operation) in the Xiaguan (下关) new-city district. The default choice for foreigners based in Dali Old Town, on the Erhai Lake shore or at Xiaguan; the modern facility, well-equipped, the most likely Dali hospital to have English-speaking doctors. Roughly 13 km / 20-30 min by taxi from Dali Old Town.
  • Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture People's Hospital (Shangri-La)迪庆藏族自治州人民医院建塘镇池慈卡街19号The main hospital for Shangri-La (Zhongdian) and the wider Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture — Grade III-A (三甲) with a 24h emergency department, in Jiantang town (建塘镇), the city centre. At 3,200 m on the Tibetan-plateau edge, this hospital handles many altitude-sickness cases — if you arrive in Shangri-La from sea level and develop persistent headache, vomiting or breathing difficulties, this is where to go. There is a smaller Shangri-La Municipal People's Hospital on Geda Road as a secondary option.

PSB Exit-Entry Offices

Public Security Bureau Exit-Entry offices handle lost-passport reports, visa extensions, and foreigner residency registration. Use the most central municipal office for a standard lost-passport report; provincial or city-level offices handle complex cases such as visa-category changes.

Foreigners trekking Tiger Leaping Gorge or based near Jade Dragon file at this office.
  • Dali Municipal PSB Exit-Entry Reception Hall大理市公安局出入境接待大厅大理政务服务中心一楼Dali's main municipal Exit-Entry hall on the ground floor of the Dali Government Services Centre in Xiaguan (下关), the new-city district about 13 km from Dali Old Town. The city was renamed from Zhongdian to Shangri-La in 2001, but Amap and some older maps still show the police authority as Xianggelila Xian (县, county) — the city is officially Shangri-La City (市) since 2014 and the office handles all foreigner cases for the Shangri-La urban area.
  • Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture PSB Exit-Entry Reception Hall迪庆藏族自治州公安局出入境管理接待大厅建塘镇迪庆藏族自治州人民检察院Prefecture-level Exit-Entry hall in Jiantang town (Shangri-La), inside the Diqing Prefecture government cluster.
