China for Travelers

One river, one direction, and one hour to catch it

Guilin

桂林

The mistake here is treating the cruise as a day out. The boats leave between 08:00 and 09:00, run 4–5 hours downstream only, and put you off in a different town — so it is not an excursion, it is the move between your two hotels. Plan the trip around it and the rest of Guangxi arranges itself. Here is where each of our Guilin guides fits.

Two is the river, five adds Longji

Two things decide a Guilin trip and neither is the fare. The cruise sails once, in a window between 08:00 and 09:00, and only downstream — miss it and you have lost the day, not the morning. And the three boat classes leave from DIFFERENT PIERS: ¥215 from Mopanshan Pier 磨盘山码头, ¥358 from Zhujiang Pier 竹江码头. Check which one your ticket says.

First time here?

The river decides where you sleep

Guilin and Yangshuo are sixty-odd kilometres apart and the famous way between them is a one-way boat that sails in the morning. So the itinerary is not a list of sights, it is a direction: sleep in Guilin, cruise down, sleep in Yangshuo. The terraces at Longji are the exception — they are two bus legs north-west of Guilin and belong either side of the river day, never in the middle of it.

01

The Li River cruise

4-5 h · ¥215

The stretch on the back of the ¥20 note. ⭐ It sails 08:00-09:00 and downstream ONLY, 4–5 hours to Yangshuo — so it is not a day out, it is the move between your two hotels. ¥215 from Mopanshan Pier 磨盘山码头 or ¥358 from Zhujiang Pier 竹江码头; same river, different deck.

Book before you land
02

Longji Rice Terraces

5-8 h · ¥80

Terraced hillsides north-west of the city, ¥80 on a ticket valid 3 days. That validity is the whole argument: a night in a terrace village costs nothing extra in admission and is the only way to be up there for the light at either end of the day.

Stay the night
03

Reed Flute Cave

1-1.5 h · ¥90

A lit limestone cave inside the city — ¥90 at the gate, about ¥82 booked online, which is the rare case where online is genuinely cheaper. It is what a wet half-day is for, and not a reason to give up a river morning.

The rainy-day answer

How long

Two nights is the river. Five is the province

Two nights buys the river and nothing else. Three buys the river and the Yangshuo countryside, which is what most people actually come for once they have seen it. Five is the first number that also fits Longji without turning it into a coach day there and back.

  1. Days 1-2

As above: a night in Guilin, then the river down to Yangshuo.

  2. Day 3

Yangshuo — the countryside by bike, Moon Hill, or a bamboo raft on a quieter tributary. Or back to Guilin for Reed Flute Cave at ¥90 if the weather has turned.

Where to sleep

You will sleep in two of these, not one

This is the one city on the site where the honest answer to “where should I stay?” is “both”. The cruise is one-way, so a night in Guilin before it and a night in Yangshuo after it is not indecision — it is the shape of the trip.

Yangshuo West StreetAfter the cruiseDownstream endWhere the boat puts you. Busy, loud and convenient — and you are already here, which is the argument.

Everything we have

Which guide answers your question

Sights carry our verdict — must see, worth it, or skip if you are tight — and each group is ordered by it rather than alphabetically. Transport and practical pages do not: “must see” answers whether to go somewhere, and a railway station has no such question.

On the ground

Five things that catch people out

The boats go once, in the morning
Departures run 08:00-09:00 and there is no afternoon sailing. A cruise you decide on over breakfast is a cruise you take tomorrow, so this is the one thing to book before you land.
The three classes leave from different piers
¥215 boats go from Mopanshan Pier 磨盘山码头; ¥358 boats from Zhujiang Pier 竹江码头. They are not the same place and the pier is printed on your ticket — read it before you get in a taxi.
It only runs downstream
4–5 hours, Guilin to Yangshuo, and there is no tourist sailing back. That is why the where-to-stay answer here is two towns rather than one.
The cheap boat does not include lunch
The ¥215 tier sells lunch separately at about ¥30; the ¥358 tier includes a buffet. Every class sees exactly the same river — what you are buying is the deck and the crowding.
The Longji ticket lasts three days
¥80 valid 3 days, which is the argument for sleeping in a terrace village rather than doing it as a day trip: a night up there adds no admission at all, and it is the only way to be there for the light.

Getting online

Your phone stops working the way you expect

China blocks Google, WhatsApp and Instagram at the network level, so a local SIM and hotel Wi-Fi do not get you round it — and since the April 2026 crackdown a VPN is no longer a dependable workaround. What works is a combination: your home SIM on international roaming, which keeps your real number for the SMS codes Chinese apps send, plus a travel eSIM — Holafly, Airalo or Nomad eSIM — routing through a foreign carrier so the firewall never applies to it.

Sort it before you fly. A foreign eSIM profile generally cannot be installed once the phone is already in mainland China, and that is a location restriction, so airport Wi-Fi does not solve it.

If something goes wrong in GuilinNational emergency numbers, hospitals used to foreign patients, and the PSB Exit-Entry offices.
  • 110PoliceGeneral emergency. English-speaking dispatchers in major cities.
  • 120Ambulance / MedicalMedical emergency. Ask for an English-speaking operator — the dispatcher can often find one.
  • 119FireFire emergency.
  • 122Traffic accidentFor traffic incidents, including on expressways and mountain roads.
  • 12308China consular protection (foreigners' affairs)The Chinese government's hotline for foreign-affairs incidents — used by foreign embassies when their citizens are in trouble in China. English-speaking operators available.

Guilin has no Western consulate — and neither does anywhere else in Guangxi province, including the regional capital, Nanning. A foreigner who loses a passport in Guilin or Yangshuo should phone their consulate in Guangzhou, the nearest major consular city for southern China, or their embassy in Beijing. Guangzhou hosts a large Western consular network including the US (which has one of its largest worldwide consulates there), UK, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands and Japan, all in the Zhujiang New Town / Tianhe CBD — Guangzhou South is reached from Guilin North in roughly 3 hours by high-speed train on the Guiyang-Guangzhou (贵广) HSR line, and Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) has direct flights from Guilin Liangjiang (KWL). The local PSB handles the police-report step regardless of where you travel for consular processing — and because Yangshuo is administratively a separate county within Guilin Municipality, foreigners staying in Yangshuo file their report at the Yangshuo County PSB, not in Guilin city. The main Guilin municipal Exit-Entry hall is on 西山路南一里 6号 by Xishan Park; there is a 24-hour self-service Exit-Entry document zone at the Guilin PSB 七星 office at 施家园路 16号, useful out of hours. Guilin Medical University runs the foreigner-experienced hospitals — the First Affiliated Hospital is the central one; the Yangshuo County People's Hospital is the one to know if you are based in Yangshuo town, but for a major emergency the larger Guilin hospitals are better equipped (about 65-80 minutes by road from Yangshuo).

Hospitals

For medical emergencies dial 120 (ambulance). The major hospitals listed below are large, well-equipped, and most likely to have English-speaking staff. For non-emergency visits, ask your travel insurance for in-network options.

  • First Affiliated Hospital of Guilin Medical University (Lequn Campus)桂林医科大学第一附属医院(乐群院区)乐群路15号The central Lequn campus of Guilin Medical University's flagship affiliated hospital — a Grade III-A (三甲) general hospital in central Guilin (Xiufeng district), with 24-hour emergency care. The university affiliation makes it the most likely Guilin hospital to have English-speaking doctors. There is also a newer, larger Lidong (漓东) campus at 经一路1号 in the east of the city if the central site is full. The default choice for foreigners staying in Guilin or arriving from Yangshuo with a serious case.
  • Guilin People's Hospital桂林市人民医院文明路12号Guilin's main municipal general hospital, central location on Wenming Road — large, well-equipped, 24h emergency department. The alternative to the Guilin Medical University hospital if you want a municipal-system rather than a university-system hospital, or if you are staying closer to Xiangshan / the Li River bank.
  • Xiangya Second Hospital of Central South University, Guilin (Diecai Campus)中南大学湘雅二医院桂林医院(叠彩院区)叠彩路2号The Guilin branch of Xiangya Hospital in Changsha — Xiangya is one of China's top-ranked hospital systems, and its Guilin partnership upgrades local specialist care. Useful for complex cases that the municipal hospitals would normally refer onwards. Diecai district, north of the Li River.
  • Yangshuo County People's Hospital阳朔县人民医院阳朔镇城中路21号The county hospital in Yangshuo town — the nearest hospital with an emergency department for foreigners based in Yangshuo, on the Yulong River or at West Street. A county-level facility, so for a major emergency the larger Guilin hospitals (Guilin Medical University First Affiliated or Guilin People's) are better equipped — about 65-80 minutes by road or HSR.

PSB Exit-Entry Offices

Public Security Bureau Exit-Entry offices handle lost-passport reports, visa extensions, and foreigner residency registration. Use the most central municipal office for a standard lost-passport report; provincial or city-level offices handle complex cases such as visa-category changes.

  • Guilin Municipal PSB Exit-Entry Administration (Main Office)桂林市公安局出入境管理支队西山路南一里6号The main Guilin PSB office for foreigner cases — lost-passport reports, visa extensions, foreigner registration — by Xishan Park west of the city centre. Handles the police-report step before you travel onward (via Guangzhou) for embassy/consulate processing. Typical hours 9am-12pm + 1pm-5pm weekdays. Bring all available passport photocopies, photo evidence and your hotel address.
  • Guilin PSB Exit-Entry Reception Hall — Qixing (24h self-service)桂林市公安局出入境管理处施家园路16号Reception hall in Qixing district on the east side of the Li River, with a 24-hour self-service Exit-Entry document zone — useful out of normal office hours. The standard counter still keeps weekday hours.
  • Guilin Xiufeng District PSB — Exit-Entry Reception Hall桂林市公安局出入境秀峰接待大厅中隐路District-level Exit-Entry reception in Xiufeng — the central district that covers most Guilin-city hotels. A convenient alternative to the main municipal office for a standard lost-passport report. Also has a 24-hour self-service zone.
  • Yangshuo County PSB Exit-Entry Office阳朔县公安局出入境管理大厅城北路与芙蓉路交叉口西100米The Exit-Entry office for Yangshuo County — the police authority foreigners staying in Yangshuo town, on the Yulong River, in Xingping or at West Street must use for their initial report. Yangshuo is administratively a separate county inside Guilin Municipality, so the Yangshuo PSB handles the local report; the document processing for an Emergency Travel Document still happens via the consular post in Guangzhou or the embassy in Beijing.
