China for Travelers

One tower, two food guides, and four ways out

Guangzhou

广州

The mistake here is arriving with a sightseeing list. Guangzhou has one ticketed attraction worth the name and two food guides, and that ratio is the honest description of the place rather than a gap in ours. People come here to eat, to trade, and to catch something onward — and it is the best-connected city in the country for the last of those. Here is where each of our Guangzhou guides fits.

Two things are worth knowing before you plan a day here. Canton Tower’s ¥228 open-air deck is a SEPARATE ticket from the ¥135 indoor halls rather than an upgrade to it, and admission stops at 22:00 even though the tower is open until 22:30. And morning tea — the actual reason to be in this city — is over by lunchtime, so it costs you a morning, not an evening.

First time here?

A city you eat in, not one you tour

Count the guides on this page and the city describes itself: four rail corridors, an airport, a station, a subway guide, two guides to what to eat, a page about hotels for a trade fair — and one tower. Almost nobody comes to Guangzhou for a monument, and the trips that go well here are built around meals and around what you are catching next.

Morning tea

2-3 h · Varies

The actual reason to be in this city, and a morning institution rather than an all-day one — a plan that puts it after noon has missed it. Cantonese food at its source, in the place the rest of the world learned it from.

02

Canton Tower

1.5-3 h · ¥135

The city's one ticketed sight, and a ladder rather than a price: ¥135 for the indoor halls and ¥228 for the open-air deck — a SEPARATE ticket, not an upgrade. ⚠️ Open to 22:30 but it stops admitting at 22:00, and the lights come on about 19:00.

Somewhere else, quickly

2 h or less · Rail fare

Shenzhen in half an hour, Hong Kong in under two, Macau about the same, and every province by rail from Guangzhou South. Being the best-connected city in the country is genuinely this place’s strongest feature.

Four ways out

How long

One day does the city. A third is a day trip out

Most people are here for a night or two on the way to Hong Kong or for the Canton Fair, and one full day genuinely covers the city. A third day is best spent leaving it — Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macau are all inside two hours.

  1. Day 1

The old town: morning tea, Shamian, the Chen Clan Academy, and Xiaobei in the afternoon if the traders’ quarter interests you.

  2. Day 2

Yuexiu Park, then the tower in the evening. If you are travelling with children, Chimelong takes the whole day instead and is the reason many families come at all.

Where to sleep

Your reason for coming picks the district

Unusually for a Chinese city, the right district here is decided by WHY you came rather than by what you want to see. Fair, food, or a connection onward — each picks a different part of town, and the mismatch that costs people the most is booking a “city centre” hotel for a trade fair that is not in the city centre.

AreaRight forTo the towerWhat it buys you
Tianhe / Zhujiang New TownA first visit, and the towerAcross the riverThe modern core, opposite Canton Tower, on the main metro spine. If you have one night and no particular reason, stay here.
Yuexiu / the old townEating, and walking~20 min by metroShamian Island, the Chen Clan hall and the morning-tea houses. The half of Guangzhou that is not glass.
PazhouThe Canton Fair~25 min by metro⚠️ Only during the Fair, and then it is the only sensible base. ⛔ A hotel calling itself "Guangzhou City Centre" is about 9 km from the halls — read the address, not the name.
By Guangzhou South stationOne night between trains~35 min by metroA long way out. Worth it only if you arrive late and leave early on the HSR.

Everything we have

Which guide answers your question

Sights carry our verdict — must see, worth it, or skip if you are tight — and each group is ordered by it rather than alphabetically. Transport and practical pages do not: “must see” answers whether to go somewhere, and a railway station has no such question.

On the ground

Four things that catch people out

The tower ticket is a ladder, not a price
¥135 buys the indoor halls; ¥228 buys the 450 m open-air platform, which is a SEPARATE ticket and not a better version of the first. Travellers report the structure and the Ferris wheel block the best angles from it, so the dearer rung is not automatically the better view.
It stops admitting half an hour before it closes
Open to 22:30, admission stops 22:00. The advice everyone gives — go up after the tour groups leave — has a back edge nobody prints, and the lights come on about 19:00 anyway.
The best thing here is over by lunchtime
Morning tea is the reason to be in Guangzhou and it is a morning institution, not an all-day one. A plan that puts it after noon has missed it.
The Canton Fair is not in the city centre
Pazhou is its own district, and a hotel marketing itself as "Guangzhou City Centre" can be 9 km from the halls. During the Fair the address matters more than the name and more than the price.

Getting online

Your phone stops working the way you expect

China blocks Google, WhatsApp and Instagram at the network level, so a local SIM and hotel Wi-Fi do not get you round it — and since the April 2026 crackdown a VPN is no longer a dependable workaround. What works is a combination: your home SIM on international roaming, which keeps your real number for the SMS codes Chinese apps send, plus a travel eSIM — Holafly, Airalo or Nomad eSIM — routing through a foreign carrier so the firewall never applies to it.

Sort it before you fly. A foreign eSIM profile generally cannot be installed once the phone is already in mainland China, and that is a location restriction, so airport Wi-Fi does not solve it.

The Guangzhou PSB Exit-Entry main bureau is on Jiefang South Road in the old-city core, walkable from Beijing Road hotels, with a 24-hour self-service document zone. Foreigner-experienced hospitals cluster on Zhongshan 2nd Road by Martyrs' Park metro.
